Wakeboarders typically start in the water, holding onto the handle of the tow rope while the boat pulls them forward. As the rider gains speed, they rise out of the water and ride on the surface, using the wake (the wave created by the boat) as a ramp to perform various tricks and maneuvers. Wakesurfing -begins by the rider being towed behind the boat using a tow rope. Once the rider has gained momentum and is comfortable, they let go of the rope and surf the boat's wake. The boat's propulsion creates a continuous wave that the surfer rides along.
